VisitScotland, as Scotland's National Tourism Organisation, has a strategic role to develop Scottish tourism in order to get the maximum economic benefit for Scotland.  It exists to support the development of the tourism industry in Scotland and to market Scotland as a quality destination.

Tourism is Scotland's most important industry, injecting over £4.2 billion annually into the Scottish economy.

It is a sector that employs 200,000 people in Scotland in 20,000 diverse businesses. The industry generates £4.2billion revenue and supports around 9 percent of employment in Scotland (13 percent in the Highlands).

Scotland's key target markets, within the UK, are Scotland, the North of England and the South of England. Scotland's key target markets, outwith the UK, are the United States of America, Germany and France. European countries in total account for almost half of overseas trips to Scotland.
